Manhole Safety
Clark County Water Reclamation District wants to remind everyone that manholes and their covers are dangerous, and it is illegal to tamper with or remove a cover.
Why should this matter to me?
Please, do not attempt to open or uncover a sanitary sewer manhole. An open manhole or unsecured cover can be dangerous in the following ways:
- People and animals can fall into open manholes.
- Unintended objects or liquids in manholes are difficult to remove and can be harmful to the environment.
- Manhole covers can be deadly if projected by a vehicle towards a pedestrian, cyclists, or other motorists.
- Gasses emitted from manholes may be flammable or explosive.
- Securing a sanitary sewer manhole cover requires specialized training and equipment.
- Additionally, intentionally pouring, dumping, or placing anything into an open sanitary sewer manhole is illegal.
If you ever see a loose or removed manhole cover, please contact us immediately to have it reseated. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to ensure our sanitary sewer system remains safe and secure.
To report a missing or loose manhole cover or if you have any other questions, please call CCWRD Collection System Services at 702-668-8354
